Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has been impeached by the Kirinyaga County Assembly over claims of gross-misconduct and abuse of office.
In a heated sitting at the County Assembly, 23 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) out of a total of 33, voted to impeach the Governor, while 4 abstained from voting. 6 Members did not attend the sitting.
Governor Waiguru is accused of abusing her office when she improperly conferred a benefit to herself by being irregularly paid for travel allowances yet she did not travel. She is also accused of grossly violating the Constitution as she failed to deliver the annual State of the County address as required by the constitution.
Chaos erupted at the County Assembly when Mutira MCA Kinyua Wangui rose up to move the motion. Karumandi MCA Antony Munene and nominated MCA Lucy Njeri claimed that their signatures had been forged as they were opposed to the motion yet their names were in the list of those who supported the Governor’s ouster.
