Acting Director General in the Ministry of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth has been elected as W.H.O’s executive board vice chairperson to represent Africa.
He was elected during a virtual World Health Assembly meeting held on Friday and will deputize Dr Harsh Vardhan, India’s Minister of Health, who was elected chairperson of the Executive Board.
Other members elected to the Executive Board include: Germany’s Björn Kümmel, Guyana’s Volda Lawrence, Ahmed Mohammed Al Saidi from Oman and Dr Amelia Afuha’amango Tu’ipulotu from Tonga.
The executive board of the W.H.O determines the World Health Assembly’s budgets, programmes and activities.
Dr. Amoth, who is a member of the National Emergency Response Commitee on coronavirus will serve on the board for a period of two years.
The Acting Director General is a medical doctor and holds a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Obstetrics/Gynaecology from the University of Nairobi. He has previously served as Senior Deputy Director of Medical Services Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Nairobi.
Dr. Amoth has a vast experience in the medical field having worked as Chief Medical Specialist Machakos Level 5 Hospital, Senior Medical specialist Obstetrics/Gynaecology at Kiambu District Hospital, District Medical Services Officer for Kiambu East and West Districts among others.
He recently began having Q and A sessions on Twitter dubbed #AskTheDG to clarify “technical issues around initiatives taken by the Ministry of Health towards managing COVID-19”.
