President Donald Trump has tweeted that the United States of America will designate Antifa as a terrorist organization.
Antifa, which is short for Anti Fascists is a loosely organized group of activists with far left leaning political inclinations who do not conform with the Democratic Party. Many members of Antifa support oppressed populations and at times employ radical methods to deliver their messages.
President Trump, speaking at the Kennedy Space Center, said that the violence and vandalism across the country was being “led by Antifa and other radical left-wing groups”. He however did not provide any evidence for his assertions.
The United States government does not have any legal authority to label any wholly domestic formation as a terrorist organization with efforts to create a domestic terrorism law being complicated by constitutional issues. It is not known how or when President Trump intends to implement his decision.
Other government officials including the attorney General Bill Barr and National Security Advisor Robert O’brien echoed Trump’s views that the violence is being led by Antifa. Law enforcement authorities said that the violence is being led by domestic extremist groups including anarchists, white supremacists and far left extremists such as Antifa.
Protests erupted in many states in the United States after George Floyd, an unarmed black man was killed by a police officer who put his knee on George Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes.
The protests have turned violent and many cities and states have responded by imposing curfews. The National Guard, America’s reserve military, has been called in some states to assist police to contain the riots.
